Bafana Bafana’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign came to an end on Sunday evening following a 2–1 defeat to five-time African champions Cameroon in the round of 16.
The knockout encounter was played at the Agdal Medina Stadium in Rabat, where South Africa were edged out by a more experienced Cameroonian side, bringing their hopes of continental glory to a premature close.
South Africa showed fight and intent from the outset and created several scoring opportunities, but failed to capitalise when it mattered most. Cameroon punished key moments and relied on their tournament pedigree to book a place in the quarter-finals. The Indomitable Lions last lifted the AFCON title in 2017.
Speaking after the match, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos lamented missed chances that he believes proved decisive.
“We started very well at the game, and we had chances to score. I think if we had scored, we can never lose the game. Even we had the chances to score those two goals and to have a draw, but it was not our day today,” said Broos.
Bafana Bafana entered the tournament with renewed optimism under Broos, after their 3rd place finish in the last AFCON edition . However, inconsistency in front of goal and moments of defensive vulnerability ultimately cost them in the knockout phase.
Attention now shifts to a long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup after 16 years. South Africa are set to face co-hosts Mexico on the opening day of the tournament, a repeat of the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup opener.
While the AFCON exit will sting, the prospect of competing on the world stage offers renewed motivation for Bafana Bafana as they look to build on recent progress and restore pride in South African football.
