Chippa United will compete in the 2nd Annual Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament in Mthatha after club chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi and Mr Wanda Mcoyi Mto reached an agreement to resolve recent communication misunderstandings.
In a joint media statement released on Wednesday, the two organisations confirmed that discussions had ended amicably, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to the growth of football in the Eastern Cape. The statement stressed that the focus remained on serving supporters and strengthening the game in the province.
The discussion ended where it needed to: with Eastern Cape football and its supporters first, the statement read.
Mpengesi acknowledged that misunderstandings can occur but emphasised the importance of putting football ahead of differences.
At the end of the day, football is about the people. Speaking directly with Mr Mto made it clear we want the same thing to grow the game in the Eastern Cape and give our supporters top-tier football. Miscommunications happen, but as leaders it is our duty to rise above them. Chippa United is deeply rooted in this province, and we look forward to taking the field in Mthatha as we prepare for the Betway Premiership season.
Mcoyi welcomed Chippa United’s participation, saying the club’s involvement would strengthen the tournament and bring excitement to football supporters across the province.

The 2nd Annual Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament will be held at Mthatha Stadium on 25 and 26 July, with Chippa United, Highbury FC and Mcoyi FC set to compete as they continue preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.
Both organisations concluded the statement by thanking supporters, sponsors and local communities for their patience and continued support, adding that preparations remain on track for what they believe will be a memorable weekend of football in the Eastern Cape.
