Golden Arrows made a statement in the opening fixture of the Carling Knockout, cruising to a convincing 4-0 victory over Chippa United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Abafana Bes’thende wasted little time asserting themselves, with Junior Dion opening the scoring in the 10th minute. The forward rose above the Chippa United defence to head home from a corner, giving Golden Arrows an early advantage.

Philani Khumalo had attempted to test the goalkeeper as early as the seventh minute, but his effort was comfortably saved. Arrows continued to push forward, and their attacking pressure paid off again in the 23rd minute when Sithole doubled their lead, with Dion providing the assist.

The home side went into the closing stages with a two-goal cushion before their substitutes delivered a decisive blow. Nhlanhla Zwane, who came off the bench, showed composure in the 83rd minute, rounding the goalkeeper before calmly slotting home Arrows’ third goal.

Two minutes later, Jerome Karalse added a fourth in spectacular fashion. Also introduced as a substitute, Karalse unleashed a finish from the edge of the box, producing a moment of quality that would not look out of place in a PlayStation football game.

The emphatic victory gave Golden Arrows the perfect start to their Carling Knockout campaign, while Chippa United were left with plenty to reflect on after conceding four goals.

Dion capped off an impressive individual performance by walking away with the Champion Player of the Match award, earning a prize of R100,000 after contributing a goal and an assist.

With four goals and a clean sheet, Abafana Bes’thende sent a clear message to their Carling Knockout rivals.
