Polokwane City against Siwelele: image by DJ Brian Rikhotso

Polokwane City bowed out of the Carling Knockout Cup after falling to a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Siwelele at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.

The evening clash ended goalless after 120 minutes of play, with either side unable to find the back of the net in Polokwane.

Siwelele set the tone, ending the first half with nine shots at goal. While the hosts Rise and Shine resorted to sitting deep and hoping to catch Siwelele on counter attacks.

Polokwane City looked threatening on the break, with target man Tidimalo Molokwane keeping the Siwele defence on their toes every time on the break.

With no breakthrough, the game went on to extra-time, where the visiting side were dealt a major blow when defender Aphiwe Baliti received marching orders.

Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Jody February stepped up and saved two spot-kicks in the shootout to see his side progress to the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinals.

Polokwane City head coach Willy Moloto was a notable absentee from the dugout, with assistant coach Sheppard Sentane taking over the reins in his absence.

Rise and Shine’s false start to the season continues as they are now winless in nine straight matches in all domestic competitions. With head coach Willy Moloto now under siege to quickly turn things around for the Polokwane-based outfit.

Rise and Shine will switch focus to the Betway Premiership as they welcome struggling TS Galaxy on Saturday, 31 October at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium, With kick-off set for 18:00.
