Milford FC secured a vital 2-1 victory over The Bees in an entertaining Motsepe Foundation Championship clash at uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon, keeping their promotion hopes firmly on track.

The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. While there were glimpses of attacking intent from either team, neither could find the breakthrough before the halftime whistle.

The match sparked into life in the second half when Milford took the lead through Khwanya, whose goal rewarded the hosts for their improved attacking display after the restart.

The Bees responded well and soon drew level. A dangerous corner delivery into the box was met with a well-placed header, bringing the visitors back into the contest.

Milford had a golden chance to restore their lead when Cele stepped up for a free kick in a promising position, but his effort failed to hit the target.

Fortunately for the home side, that miss did not prove costly. Moments later, Jayi found the decisive goal, finishing clinically to hand Milford a deserved lead that they would hold until the final whistle.

There was late drama in stoppage time when tensions boiled over. A Bees player was shown a straight red card after an incident involving Mthabela, capping off a fiercely contested encounter.

Elsewhere, league leaders Kruger United strengthened their hold at the summit with an impressive 3-1 victory over Black Leopards. Hungry Lions, currently third, were held to a goalless draw by seventh-placed Upington City. Lerumo Lions climbed to eighth after a valuable 1-0 away win over the University of Pretoria, who remain in 12th position.

Milford’s victory sees them maintain second place on the table, keeping the pressure on Kruger United at the top. With Hungry Lions also firmly in the promotion mix, the race for top honours is becoming increasingly competitive.

Meanwhile, teams such as Lerumo Lions and Upington City continue to push for a stronger finish, while The Bees, sitting 13th, and University of Pretoria will be eager to climb further up the standings. Even Gomora United, currently 11th, remain in the hunt as the battle across the table intensifies.
