Kaizer Chiefs youngster Mfundo Vilakazi says head coach Fernando Da Cruz has challenged him to become the best player in the Betway Premiership this season.

The 20-year-old spoke after being named Man of the Match in Amakhosi’s 1-0 Toyota Cup victory over Scottland FC, where he scored the winning goal.

Speaking post-match, Vilakazi shared the confidence Da Cruz has shown in him.

When the coach arrived, he told me that this season he wants to make me the best player in the PSL.

What I have to do is listen to him and do whatever he tells me. I must not focus on things outside football because he believes in me. I have to work hard on the field and not listen to what people are saying outside.

I think this goal will help boost my confidence ahead of our first Betway Premiership game next week. I just have to keep working hard, and many good things will come.

Vilakazi’s standout display against Scottland FC capped off an impressive pre-season campaign and highlighted the growing trust Da Cruz has placed in the talented midfielder ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
