A new chapter in the rich history of Soweto football was officially unveiled on Tuesday morning as Orlando Pirates Football Club and Amstel announced a landmark five-year partnership that will see the iconic Orlando Stadium renamed the Orlando Amstel Arena.
The unveiling ceremony, held in the heart of Orlando, Soweto, marked a significant moment for South African football and the local community. Proceedings were opened by a stirring performance and prayer from the Orlando Pirates choir, setting a reflective yet celebratory tone for the historic announcement.
The partnership goes beyond a traditional sponsorship agreement, reflecting shared values of quality, passion and community between the Soweto giants and their official beer partner.
“This is more than a sponsorship, it’s a celebration of the people and connections that define South African football,” said Orlando Pirates marketing manager Sindi Sibisi. “It represents who we are as a club and what we stand for.”
Speaking at the event, Orlando Pirates Chief Administrator Mcebo Dlamini highlighted the importance of infrastructure development within township football and the deep emotional bond between the club, the stadium and its supporters.
“The talent is there, but what is often missing is the infrastructure. We are rooted in the township, and this stadium means a lot to the people. It carries history, significance and responsibility,” Dlamini said.
“When you are associated with Orlando Pirates, you are not just a commodity – you become part of the family. Once Always.”
Dlamini also took time to acknowledge chairman Dr Irvin Khoza, celebrating his birthday and recognising his enduring contribution to the club.
Former Pirates legend Edward Motale, who formed part of the panel, reflected on the symbolism of the stadium and its lasting memories.
“Every time I pass Orlando Stadium, I am showered with memories. This is big for Orlando Pirates,” Motale said.
Echoing those sentiments, former goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo described the stadium as a place that will forever feel like home to those who wore the famous black and white jersey.
The unveiling drew widespread attention beyond the venue, with the streets of Orlando briefly coming to a standstill as passers-by paused to witness the moment the covering dropped, revealing the new stadium name, a powerful symbol of both change and continuity.
As part of the partnership, the Orlando Amstel Arena will benefit from upgraded facilities, enhanced hospitality suites and branded fan zones. Funds from the deal will also be channelled into youth academy expansion, social responsibility programmes and further stadium upgrades, reinforcing Pirates’ long-standing commitment to community development.
The newly renamed Orlando Amstel Arena will host its first competitive match on Saturday, 31 January 2026, when Orlando Pirates welcome Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership fixture. Supporters seated in the west stand will be greeted by newly installed bold red seats featuring Amstel branding, adding a fresh visual identity to the historic ground.
With anticipation building, the return of football to the Orlando Amstel Arena promises not just a matchday spectacle, but the continuation of a proud legacy rooted in Soweto and its people.
